Gallery Questions

Why should I buy from an art gallery?

A reputable gallery can help ensure that you are making an informed purchase of authentic work for a fair price. We've been in business in Austin since 1998 and we will work hard to ensure you are satisfied with your purchase. We stand behind every piece of art we sell.

Is there a fee for admission?

No. Other than special events, our gallery is always free to enter and everyone is always welcome.

How often do you have events?

One or two times per month. Subscribe to our newsletter or check our events page frequently to ensure you know about all of our events.

Do you buy used art or take it on consignment?

If you have a piece by an artist that we represent in the gallery, contact us at inquiries@Ao5Gallery.com with details about the work. We do not take other consignments at this time.

How do you select artists to be represented in the gallery?

Artists should email the gallery director, Todd Gresley, at todd@Ao5Gallery.com with photos of their artwork to seek representation at the gallery. Todd receives many requests per week, so please be patient in hearing a response.

Can you appraise my art? How can I find out the value of my art?

We are not certified appraisers.  You’re going to want to find an appraiser with specific expertise in the style or type of art you’re appraising instead. A well-executed appraisal will cost about $125 - $350 per hour.

How often do you rotate the art being shown?

We rotate sections of the gallery a few times a month so stop by often to see new pieces!

Should I buy art as an investment?

Fine art can be a fine investment and there’s lots of research to help you cherry pick which art will appreciate the most over time. However, we always suggest that art is best purchased out of love for the piece and the artist.

Can you help me find my art style?

Of course, everyone at the gallery is passionate about art and would love to answer any questions you may have about finding your unique style. Overall, we suggest that the piece you’re naturally drawn to is the one you should bring home with you!

Can I meet the artists?

Absolutely! The artists will give talks at our monthly events and they love chatting to everyone about their creative process. We also may host VIP events for those who have purchased an artist’s original artwork in the future.

Are they all Austin artists?

Not all of them but we do have a few. If you’re looking for artists that paint Austin or Texas hotspots and landscapes, we’ve got you covered.

What’s the deal with the Dr. Seuss art?

Most people don’t realize that Dr. Seuss’s artistic talents stretched far beyond his work in children’s books. Seuss always dreamed of sharing his “Secret Art” with his fans and had entrusted his wife, Audrey, to carry out his wishes once he was gone. Audrey, too, believed the work deserved further recognition and that Ted himself would someday be evaluated not only as an author, but as an artist in his own right. One or two secret works of Dr. Seuss are released to the public each year. All Dr. Seuss works can only be purchased through an authorized gallery. Find out more at: https://www.drseussart.com/

Are the Dr. Seuss works for sale?

Yes! You can purchase anything you see on our walls and website. Contact us at inquiries@Ao5Gallery.com if you see a piece online you would like to purchase.

Do all prices include the cost of the frame?

Not everything. The tags in the gallery specify whether the price is unframed or framed. On our website, the description will specify whether the price is unframed or framed and you will also see multiple views of the piece in the frame if it is a framed piece.

Can I buy any piece online?

For the most part. Our website will allow you to click-and-buy any piece to have it shipped or available for pickup at the gallery except for the Dr. Seuss art. Please send us an email at inquiries@Ao5Gallery.com if you would like to purchase a Dr. Seuss piece.

How is the shipping price calculated?

The shipping price mostly depends on the weight of the piece. If you’re shipping a framed piece, it’s going to cost a bit more than the same piece unframed. If the piece is extremely large, then you will receive a custom quote that accounts for both the weight and shipping distance.

I live in Austin or around the area. Do I need to pay for shipping?

If you can pick your piece up from the gallery, you don’t need to pay for shipping. You’ll get an option at checkout whether you’d like to pick it up or have it shipped. Just select “pick up” and you won’t have to pay for shipping! Al

Do you only carry original pieces?

We carry both original and limited edition pieces.

I like the style of an artist’s work but I want something very specific. Will they do a commission for me?

Most artists will. Come into the gallery to ask us or email inquiries@Ao5Gallery.com with the artist’s name and request.

Which “big name” artists do you carry?

We’re proud to host art by Dr. Seuss, Salvador Dalí, Gabe Leonard, Jermaine Rogers, John Morse, Bill Mack, and Hugh Syme.

What percent of artists were sought out vs. came to the gallery for representation?

For every 1000 requests to seek representation at the gallery, usually only 0 to 1 of those artists will receive representation. Thus, most of the pieces in the gallery come from artists we’ve discovered ourselves over the years.

Do you only have paintings?

Nope! We also carry sculptures, vintage posters, artists’ books and merchandise, and more!

How can I keep up with everything that’s going on at Ao5 Gallery?

Find us on all social media platforms @Ao5Gallery. You can also subscribe to our newsletter. We post information about upcoming events, newly arrived pieces at the gallery, backgrounds on our artists, and more.

How long have you been in business?

Ao5 Gallery opened here in Austin, TX in 1998 and has been in continuous operation ever since. We started out as Art on 5th, located on 5th street, but when the gallery moved, we changed our name to Ao5 to avoid confusion over the location.

Can you help a first-time art buyer?

Of course! We are proud to have helped many people with their first art purchase. Just let us know you're a virgin and we'll take it slow and easy! ;)

Can you help me hang my art?

Except for very special circumstances, we usually refer you to specialists. If it's just regularly dry wall, for art purchased from us we are happy to provide some tips and tricks, as well as the necessary hardware, so you can do it yourself. It's really not hard.

Standard edition numbers are usually written as "X/Y" or "X of Y", where "X" is the edition number and "Y" is the total number of reproductions.
