Beyond the Canvas: Ao5 Collectors Explore the Original 'Lorax' at the LBJ Presidential Library

It's not every day you get to hang out with the Lorax. Recently, the team at Ao5 Gallery treated a lucky group of Art of Dr. Seuss collectors to the ultimate field trip. They headed over to the LBJ Presidential Library right here in Austin for an exclusive, VIP look at Dr. Seuss’s original artwork for The Lorax.

The Lorax remains one of Dr. Seuss's most important and enduring works because it wraps a powerful environmental message inside a brightly colored, entertaining story. Published in 1971, long before going "green" was a mainstream idea, the book introduced readers to the concept of conservation through the cautionary tale of the greedy Once-ler and the outspoken Lorax who "speaks for the trees." It beautifully highlights the delicate balance between industry and nature, teaching kids and reminding adults that we all share a responsibility to protect our planet. The story's famous final message, reminding us that nothing will get better unless someone cares "a whole awful lot," turns a simple children's book into a timeless call to action that feels just as relevant today as it did over fifty years ago.

Unlike your average quiet art viewing, this was a lively and engaging behind the scenes adventure. Guests got up close and personal with the very first sketches, bright colors, and early drafts that made the Truffula Trees and the grumpy but lovable Lorax famous. Seeing Theodor Geisel’s original pencil marks laid out right there on the tables made the magic of the book feel completely real.

The historic LBJ Presidential Library set an amazing backdrop for the day. Whereas most of Dr. Seuss’s original artworks from his books are housed at The University of California San Diego, the original Lorax works are right in the heart of Austin. Blending classic American history with Dr. Seuss’s colorful world sparked some fantastic conversations among the group. It was a perfect mix of learning, laughing, and talking about great storytelling.

For the Ao5 team and their collectors, getting out of the gallery and diving into this piece of pop culture history was an absolute blast. The gallery has plenty more exciting and colorful adventures in store for the Austin art community.
