“Best Gallery in Texas” Enters Its 3rd Decade Under New Ownership
AUSTIN, TX –
Dan and Camille Easton are excited to announce they have acquired Ao5 Gallery from its founder, Joe Sigel. Sigel started the gallery in 1998 in the former Austin’s Children’s Museum building on West 5th Street in old west Austin. Sigel relocated the gallery to South Lamar in 2014, and subsequently rebranded from “Art on 5th” to Ao5 Gallery. The gallery has expanded significantly over the years, becoming the largest contemporary art gallery in Austin.
Ao5 Gallery is known for having one of the largest permanent collections of The Secret Art of Dr. Seuss, a fun and whimsical body of work from the late Theodor Geisel. “This is one of the things that initially drew us to the Gallery. We both grew up on Dr. Seuss books and collected many of the books for our children,” said Camille Easton. In addition to a vast array of original art, hundreds of vintage movie and concert posters, and pop art, the gallery is home to an expert custom framing shop which offers museum quality framing, as well as art restoration services. The gallery has been awarded “Best Gallery in Austin” multiple times by The Austin Chronicle, as well as “Best Gallery in Texas” by American Art Awards.
Many frequent visitors to the gallery recognize Todd Gresley as the face of Ao5 Gallery. Gresley, having over 22 years of experience in the industry, will continue his current role as Gallery Director moving forward. “It’s been thrilling to be the Gallery Director for the past 5 years. I am elated to take Ao5 Gallery into its 3rd decade with the new owners and continue to bring exciting and innovative shows that cannot be seen anywhere else in Austin.”
The Eastons recently returned to Austin in late 2018 after spending 14 years away. When they learned of Sigel’s interest in moving closer to his family in California, they decided to take a closer look at the gallery. “We were incredibly impressed with what we saw,” said Dan Easton. “Joe has assembled a first-class team of talented art and framing professionals that do outstanding, award-winning work. We are honored to join that team.”
“It is so fulfilling to see what was once my “baby” gallery in 1998 become the full “adult” now at 21 years old”, said Sigel, “so it’s time for me to pass the baton to Dan and Camille, and the best gallery director anywhere—Todd Gresley.”
“We have an incredible staff who love what they do. They will assuredly continue the legacy of my original mission statement to bring artists and artwork to Austin that have never been seen here before. Thanks to Austin for supporting us so well for over two decades.”
The Eastons previously worked in their family’s print and digital media business in Victoria, Texas. They dedicated many volunteer hours to various arts groups and are long-time supporters of the arts. Prior to that, Dan Easton was VP of Operations for an Austin software startup. “I’ve always believed that variety is the spice of life, and my career has been nothing if not varied,” Dan Easton said. As President, Dan Easton will assume the role of business manager, while Camille Easton plans to get involved on the creative side. “I bring the business experience, but she really brings the passion,” Dan Easton said.
“We are excited about the opportunity to continue Ao5 Gallery’s legacy in Austin and look forward to getting acquainted with the arts community in general, and with our customers and artists in particular.”
